A mother's bond with her child, as profound as the sea itself, captured in this timeless moment of a mother orca and her precious calf.
I photographed this image in the Sea of Cortez. The orcas were in an area where the visibility was a challenge. The water was green with a lot of plankton blooms, which limits the visibility. We positioned the boat way a head of the orcas and we dropped in. I waited to see if the orcas would be interested in us. If they were not, they had enough room to avoid us and would pass by unseen.
From the murk they emerged, a pod of orcas swam by, behind them a mom and young calf emerged. I snapped away, hoping one image would come out from the session. Happily one did.
